Industrial Development of Pushchairs

Pushchairs and prams came to be when an English inventor has developed the idea in 1733. As a garden architect in England he was tasked to build a means of transport for the children of the Duke of Devonshire. Thus, a shell shaped basket on wheels and was richly decorated to be pulled by a small pony or a goat.

A couple of other modifications have also been derived to provide comfort and ease to the infant. In 1889, the reversible pram was incepted as the bassinet that was designed so it could face out or in towards the parent. Aside from the changes to the carriage, increased manoeuvrability was also focused. By 1965, a stroller with an aluminium frame was designed. It was also the time when the first true umbrella pushchair was created. Moreover, the design has made it easier to transport the strollers to other places. The stroller industry in 1980s, however, perfected the concept by developing new features, safer construction and more accessories for added comfort and satisfaction.

Since the Victorian era, prams or perambulators have been widely used in the UK. Later on, suspensions were added that have made the ride smoother for both the infant and the person pushing it. Nowadays, as they are large and expensive, prams are very rarely used compared with the buggies or pushchairs. These types of baby carriage are also used for multiple infants that would include the twin and the tandem configurations. However, due to the increase in the number of multiple births, the triple pushchair was developed.
